Context of the service

Rice is grown in more than 100 countries under various conditions. The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) classifies rice systems into four families: deepwater, lowland rainwater, plateau rainwater and irrigated, often present in the same watershed.

Rice cultivation is essential for food security in many countries and generates methane emissions, accounting for 12% of global CH4 emissions in 2000.

Improved agricultural practices, including water and agricultural residue management, could limit these emissions.

This study aims to complete a GHG meta-analysis of irrigated rice projects financed by AFD via two case studies, on the WAT4CAM and Svay Chek projects in Cambodia.

Services provided

- Estimation of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the WAT4CAM project using the NEXT tool and field data, allowing a comparison between the ex-ante situation and the mid-term situation;

- Production of maps under ABC Map for the Svay Check project in order to enrich the spatial analysis at the project feasibility study stage;

- Development of a roadmap for research and development activities to be carried out on irrigated rice cultivation, based on the conclusions of the meta-analysis previously conducted by SalvaTerra for the Scientific and Technical Committee for Agricultural Water (COSTEA) and AFD.

Summary of the service

GHG impact analyses of the WAT4CAM and Svay Check irrigated rice projects in Cambodia: Estimation of the GHG emissions of the WAT4CAM project using the NEXT tool and field data, allowing a comparison between ex-ante and mid-term balances; Production of maps under ABC Map for the Svay Check project in order to enrich the spatial analysis at the project feasibility study stage; Development of a roadmap for research and development activities to be carried out on irrigated rice cultivation.
