Context of the service

The project "Community-based Climate Risk Management in Chad" is being developed with the support of UNDP and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). It provides for (i) the establishment of a community-based early warning system (CB-EWS) for climate-related risk preparedness and (ii) risk management capacity building.
SalvaTerra contributed to the preparation of the project, in particular on the assessment of climate change risks and the assessment of the impacts of the project. Recommendations were also made for additional climate risk analyses of southern food and cash crops and rice growing areas in the southwest.

Services provided

The climate change expert conducted the following analyses:
- Review of existing information on current climate change and climate change scenarios;
- Analysis of vulnerabilities to climate change in the Saharan / Sahelian / Sudanian areas;
- Identification of current/observed and future/projected impacts of climate change in these three areas
- Identification of risks arising from project interventions and drafting of a risk management plan
- Identification of needs for additional studies.
In addition to interviews with local stakeholders, the analyses mobilized the following sources: Chad's initial national communication (2001), National Action Programme to Combat Desertification (2003), National Adaptation Action Programme (2010), Second National Communication (2012), National Strategy to Combat Climate Change (2017).
