Context of the service

Once the world's leading producer of ylang-ylang essential oils, the Union of the Comoros is now facing significant challenges. In crisis since 2019, the sector is facing a series of economic, environmental and competitive constraints, affecting its dynamism and competitiveness on international markets.

In this context, the AFIVEV project, funded by the French Development Agency (AFD), was launched to improve the competitiveness of agricultural cash crops, including ylang-ylang. The project aims not only to strengthen the value chain and promote Comorian products, but also to overcome the obstacles faced by producers, processors and exporters.

This market study is part of the third component of the AFIVEV project, which specifically concerns the improvement of international commercial opportunities for Comorian agricultural products.

Services provided

1. International Market Mapping: The study analyzes the major producing, exporting, and importing countries, as well as the trends in the global essential oils market. It also examines the distribution channels and standards in force in these markets.

2. Analysis of regional competition: a benchmark is carried out with competing countries, in particular Madagascar, in order to compare trade policies, pricing strategies and product quality, and thus assess the strengths and weaknesses of the Comorian offer.

3. Promotion of Comorian products: a promotional action plan is developed to strengthen the visibility and attractiveness of the Comorian offer internationally. It includes the creation of marketing tools, communication strategies promoting the quality and traceability of ylang-ylang oils, as well as the implementation of a “Made in Comoros” label.

4. Market and product diversification: the study identifies opportunities for diversification, both in terms of markets and by-products (cosmetics, aromatherapy, industrial uses), with the aim of expanding the ylang-ylang range and accessing new segments.
