The international vanilla market is in crisis and niche origins, such as vanilla from the Comoros, are suffering the full force of the collapse in prices.
The AFIDEV project, led by Expertise France (EXFR) and funded by AFD, aims to strengthen the competitiveness of Comorian agricultural products, including vanilla: growth in production, improvement of quality, sustainability and better remuneration of actors.
In this context, Expertise France commissioned an international market study in order to develop vanilla exports, through the consolidation of traditional markets and the opening up to new markets.
- Analysis of the overall supply: different types of vanilla products and production characteristics in the main producing countries (Comoros, Madagascar, Indonesia and Uganda);
- Analysis of global demand: geographical distribution of buyers, specific analysis of European demand and related regulatory opportunities and constraints;
- State of play of the vanilla value chain, based on field interviews in the Comoros, remote interviews with vanilla importers from the Comoros, interviews at the International Food Fair (SIAL) in Paris in October 2024 (in the company of Comorian players in the vanilla sector);
- Comparative analysis of the competition with vanilla from Madagascar and Uganda;
- Development of an action plan to promote the supply of Comorian vanilla for export.
Study of international markets for vanilla products and promotion of Comorian vanilla exports: Analysis of the global offer (particularly from the Comoros, Madagascar, Indonesia and Uganda); Analysis of global demand (in particular European demand, opportunities and related regulatory constraints); State of play of the vanilla value chain in the Comoros; Comparative analysis of competition with vanilla from Madagascar and Uganda; Development of an action plan to promote the export of Comorian vanilla.
