The Project for the Establishment of the Fundamentals of the Poultry Sector in Guinea (PEFFAG) is led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAGEL), with the technical assistance of Expertise France. Its objective is to increase the production and consumption of Guinean poultry products, and to strengthen the structuring of the poultry sector.
It includes three technical components: i) improving the health and technical performance of poultry farms; (ii) to ensure the quality of poultry feed; (iii) to promote the marketing and consumption of Guinean poultry products.
As part of the PEFFAG, this prospective study aimed to analyse the value chains and the conditions for the development and sustainability of 3 intensive sub-sectors: broilers, laying hens and poultry feed. The aim was to propose guidelines for the definition of a national strategy for the development of the intensive poultry sector.
- Characterization of value chains: structuring of the poultry sector (links, number of operators, professional organizations), location and typology of farmers and feed manufacturers; technical and economic characterization of intensive livestock farms based on interviews and a quantitative survey; estimation of chicken meat and egg flows;
- Analysis of health constraints and existing regulations;
- Analysis of the agricultural context and the main local productions used in poultry feed;
- Analysis of foreign trade policies, rules and data: tariff and non-tariff measures applicable to poultry products and inputs; import-export data for the main poultry products and agricultural raw materials;
- Analysis of the consumption profiles of chicken, eggs and egg products of Guinean households based on a quantitative survey;
- Analysis of support measures for these sectors: national policies and development programmes; measures adopted in other African countries;
- Estimation of raw material needs and study of agricultural and feed manufacturing potential;
- Assessment of the obstacles and opportunities to local production; identification of avenues for the development of a national strategy for the development of intensive poultry farming in Guinea.
Study of three value chains (i) broiler chicken, (ii) laying hens and (iii) poultry feed: characterization of value chains; mapping of actors and evaluation of flows; analysis of trade rules and import-export data; analysis of support measures for these value chains, including in neighbouring countries; consumer survey; analysis of the obstacles and opportunities to local production; identification of avenues for the development of a national strategy for the development of intensive poultry farming in Guinea.
