Context of the service

IFAD funded the Sudan Integrated Carbon Sequestration Project (ICSP), which aimed to contribute to climate change mitigation through the promotion of reforestation in the South and East of the country.

In this context, the ICSP team requested support from SalvaTerra on two topics: (i) Two-day training on greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories in the forest sector for 20 Forest National Corporation (FNC) officials and IFAD staff, and (ii) Assessment of the progress made so far in implementing the National Forest Monitoring System (NFMS).

Services provided

- Training on GHG inventories in the forest sector: Background and requirements of the Climate Convention, and introduction to the 2003 Good Practice Guidance and the 2006 IPCC Guidelines; Monitoring of land use (activity data) by remote sensing; Monitoring of forest degradation by field inventories and/or remote sensing; Estimation of emission factors using default and/or field data; Estimation of GHGs (including uncertainties) according to UNFCCC requirements and IPCC recommendations; Formatting of AFOLU reports.

- Analysis of progress in the implementation of the National Forest Monitoring System (NFMS): Interviews with the ICSP team and other Sudanese experts; Analysis of NFMS data, reports and methodological notes; Assessment of gaps with international requirements (based on UNFCCC decisions on REDD+ and IPCC guidelines on AFOLU); Formulation of recommendations (development of multi-date maps of land use, realization of a national forest inventory, standardized reporting on AFOLU).

Summary of the service
