Context of the service

The Sidama Region of Ethiopia is a key territory for coffee production, the economic pillar of small-scale local producers. However, this sector faces multiple challenges: reduction of tree cover, soil degradation, pressures on water resources and impacts of climate change.

In order to support coffee farmers towards more resilient and sustainable production, the NGO PUR, with the support of the FFEM via the Private Sector Innovation Facility (FISP-CLIMATE), has set up a project combining ecosystem regeneration through agroforestry, income diversification (particularly through beekeeping) and strengthening of local organizations.

An in-depth evaluation of the project was carried out to measure its impact and identify levers for improvement.

Services provided

The evaluation made it possible to analyse the relevance, coherence, effectiveness and sustainability of the actions put in place. It included a literature review, interviews with local stakeholders (producers, cooperatives, institutions), as well as field visits to observe the concrete results of the project.

Among the aspects evaluated: the impact of beekeeping training, the appropriation of agroforestry practices, the structuring of cooperatives, as well as the project's ability to integrate into local dynamics.

The evaluation also made policy recommendations, including on strengthening institutional partnerships, improving exit strategies, and optimizing financing mechanisms to ensure the sustainability of impacts.
