Context of the service

IFAD's Adaptation for Smallholder Agriculture (ASAP) programme aims to integrate climate change into its operations. In 2020, ASAP was composed of a portfolio of 42 active projects in 41 countries.

Nature-based solutions (NBS) can contribute to climate change adaptation and mitigation, while preserving biodiversity.

SalvaTerra has been mobilized by IFAD to support it in capitalizing on the NBS implemented through the projects of the ASAP portfolio. The aim of this work was to highlight NBSs, better promote it to policymakers and donors, and support its operationalization and scaling up by IFAD practitioners.

Services provided

- Review of the existing literature on NBSs: origins of the concept and theoretical framework; work to operationalize the concept;

- Development of an analysis grid on the outcomes and impacts of NBSs, based on the following criteria: i) climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction, ii) climate change mitigation potential, iii) provision of non-carbon ecosystem services, iv) food security and income generation, v) social benefits;

- Selection of case studies on NBSs based on a document review and screening work of the projects of the ASAP portfolio;

- Development of 7 case studies: Pasture rotation in Tajikistan; Natural Resource Governance Framework in Sudan; Mangrove restoration in The Gambia; Shade trees and associated crops in Nicaragua; Effective microorganisms in Laos; Watershed Management in Ethiopia; Sustainable land restoration in Niger;
