Context of the service

To facilitate research and knowledge sharing on REDD+, CIFOR and its partners have undertaken a Global Comparative Study (GCS) of REDD+ pilot initiatives.
Implemented over 4 years, the study aims to draw lessons from REDD+ initiatives at national and sub-national levels, in 11 countries – Bolivia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Mozambique, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Tanzania and Vietnam. The overall objective of the GCS is to provide decision-makers and the expert community with the information, analysis and methods necessary to ensure effective, cost-effective and equitable reductions in GHG emissions, while ensuring socio-environmental co-benefits.
The expert was involved in the GCS to establish a country profile of Cameroon, with regard to the capacities for monitoring, reporting and verification of forest carbon stock changes (MRVs).

Services provided

The services provided were as follows:
1/ Evaluation of available data (existing and in production) in terms of maps, satellite images, canopy change analyses, resource information systems and agricultural statistics,
2/ Evaluation of technical capacities in mapping and remote sensing,
3/ Assessment of future developments affecting forest carbon stocks: agriculture, mining, biofuel production, hydropower and other infrastructure.
4/ Identification of gaps to be filled to meet international requirements on MRV (IPCC guidelines),
5/ Recommendations to fill gaps in data, capacity and methodologies.
